Ben represents our utter failure
at serving as foster parents for Gordon Setter rescue. After
several weeks in foster care with us, we’ve decided that
Ben needs to be with us permanently.
Sadly, Ben’s story is typical of rescued dogs who struggle
to find a forever home. At 2 years of age, he was dropped off
at the Idaho Humane Society by the first owner’s neighbor.
The owner had abandoned Ben, and the neighbor was unable to care
for him. At that point, Ben was malnourished and wormy, and he
was rescued from the shelter by GSCA rescue. From there he was
adopted by an elderly setter fancier, who four years later, placed
him with rescue again when she could no longer care for him.
In rescue it was discovered he was a resource guarder, making
a permanent placement challenging.
We were Ben’s second foster home, and applied behavior
modification techniques to work on his food bowl and furniture
guarding. He has shown tremendous improvement. It is remarkable
how quickly behavior modification can address and solve troubling
canine behaviors. In the course of his daily training, we realized
Ben was meant to be with us. A healthy, handsome 7 year-old,
Ben now has a bright and busy future: he will earn his CGC and
train for rally obedience, and participate in AKC hunt tests.
Please welcome Ben, “Tuxedo’s 24/7” as the
newest addition to the Tuxedo family.
